4 Simple Heating and Cooling Efficiency Tips

Did you know that the average American household spends more than $2,000 every year on energy bills? According to Energy Star, the Environmental Protection Agency’s energy conservation program, heating and cooling operational costs can account for close to half of that.

From reducing inefficiencies to fixing leaks and getting more from your heating and air conditioning units, our heating and cooling experts have extensive experience to provide the best and most effective solutions.

1. Change Your Filter

Cleaning or replacing your air filter is perhaps the most simple (and significant) tip for homeowners to implement. Energy is lost when air conditioners and furnaces have to work harder to draw air through dirty filters. Simply cleaning it can save 5% of the energy used.

2. Set Your Programmable Thermostat

Program your thermostat to control the heat or air conditioning at night and when you’re away…then forget it. What temperature should your thermostat be set to in the summer and winter? In the winter, program your thermostat to 68 degrees when you’re at home and set it back to 62 degrees at night or when you’re away. This could easily save you 10% on your heating bills.

In the summer, the ideal temperature is 78 degrees, when you’re at home. If this is too warm, consider running a ceiling fan, which does not use as much energy. The biggest opportunity for saving on cooling costs in the summer is setting the thermostat higher (to 85 degrees) when you’re away or out of town.

3. Help Out Your HVAC Unit

During the hot summer months, keep blinds and curtains closed to block the sun’s rays. This helps to make your home cooler and keep your AC from running nonstop. In the winter months, open the curtains and blinds to allow the sun’s light to warm your home naturally.

Ensure your house is airtight by sealing air leaks at drafty doors and windows with weatherstripping. In the summer months, run heat producing appliances. such as dryers and dishwashers, at night or early morning.

4. Invest in an ENERGY STAR Heating and Cooling Unit

Did you know that today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid 1970s. Every generation of air conditioners and furnaces increases in efficiency. Even if your air conditioner or furnace is only 10 years old, you could save 20% to 40% of your energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.

If you are replacing an older heating or cooling unit, make sure that you have it installed by a professional. If installed incorrectly, an energy-efficient unit could perform just as poorly as an older inefficient model, which completely defeats the purpose of an upgrade.
