7 Heating and Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

heating and air conditioning maintenance Air TechLike any mechanical system, your HVAC equipment needs a little TLC every now and then. Whether you have a commercial sized unit or a sleek wall-mounted system, don’t make it work harder than it should. Follow these heating and air conditioning maintenance tips to keep your HVAC running smoothly, so you’ll stay comfortable all year long.

Heating and Air Conditioning Maintenance: 7 Things You Should Do Now

As a family-owned business in LBI, we know the importance of keeping your home comfortable and your family safe. A big part of that is heating and air conditioner maintenance. Even if you didn’t experience problems with your HVAC unit last year, it still needs a maintenance check seasonally to ensure proper functionality and optimal efficiency.

As always, Air Tech recommends following your HVAC manufacturer’s suggestions when it comes to maintenance. Here are some pro-tips to keep your HVAC systems in top shape that they don’t necessarily mention in the manual.

Winterize Your Air Conditioning

As summer comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to taste at Long Beach Island’s Chowderfest…and of course, winterizing your air conditioner

  • Clear Away Debris. Did you know that the most egregious source of off-season damage to your AC isn’t the NJ snow? It’s actually animals. An easy way to keep rodents away from your AC is to keep the ground clear of debris and brush, so they don’t have a place to take shelter.
  • Clean the Unit. After you power down your unit, hose it down thoroughly to free up dust, dirt and dead bugs.
  • Cover the Air Conditioner. Once the AC unit is dry, protect your unit with a fitted cover or use a tarp secured with a bungee cord. Once covered, place a slab of plywood on top (weighed down with a brick) to secure the cover and protect it from harsh winter weather.
  • Cover the Pipes. Foam pipe covers are a simple purchase from any home improvement store. Secure the covered pipes with duct tape to insulate and prevent the pipes from bursting in below freezing weather.

Get Your Heating Unit Ready for Winter

Major New Jersey winter storms are still a few months away (we hope), but as the weather cools, it’s important to pay attention to your property’s furnace repair and maintenance needs.

Doing your maintenance now will pay off when the weather turns frigid!

  • Change Your Air Filters. A good reminder to change or clean your air filters is timing it to the seasons. This simple tip will not only keep particles out of your HVAC, but can prolong its lifespan and improve efficiency, too. As a rule of thumb, check your filter every one to three months.
  • Schedule Pre-Season Tune-Up. Perhaps the most important step of all is scheduling your annual tune-up. A professional technician will inspect the heating system for any possible repair concerns that could grow worse, adjust components and clean the unit, so it works at maximum efficiency over the winter. At this time, they will also check air vents to ensure a strong air flow and inspect that the thermostat is working correctly.
  • Test Out Your Heating Unit. As part of your scheduled tune-up, your technician will turn on the heater to listen for any strange sounds that could indicate wear and tear. If you wait until the first freeze, you could be dealing with a cold, uncomfortable situation.
